I’ve been a member of the garden since 2012 and was present for the inaugural till. For many years I enjoyed having the extra space for growing and feeling like I was sort of a part of something. I would often ask for special projects I could do on my own time and I loved that flexibility. In 2019 I was asked if I would like to take the position of Coordinator and I accepted. From then on my relationship with the garden drastically changed. Suddenly I had alot more to learn, more problems to solve, a big beautiful space to revive and make thrive, and.. a big group of people to get to know, to help and be helped by. I went from “sort of” to absolutely being a part of something.
These years as the coordinator have made the most impact on me, have stretched me to a much greater awareness of things I value deeply. It has challenged me to be better at things I would otherwise have less experience with. The things I am most excited about are the continual bonding of our garden community, the chance to grow on a larger scale, and the mission of providing fresh food to our neighbors.
This garden space holds a history of connecting people to the land, of providing a haven for wildlife, plants, and an ever-changing but present community of stewards.
I sincerely hope that Werner’s Garden can be preserved, to continue fostering community and fighting for food justice.
