I moved to Mt Airy in late spring of 2021 from East Kensington where I was very active in local community garden, Emerald Street Community Farm. It was one of the hardest things to say goodbye to when the time came to move. But the universe didn’t deprive me of a garden space for long because I found Werner’s just weeks after making the move. I volunteered to help out with the compost at the garden and got to know Anne Marie and several other gardeners through community work days and random overlapping while at the garden. Everyone was so welcoming!
I was so impressed with the organization at Werner’s and could tell that a lot of work and love had been put into the space. This includes many communal growing areas with berries, grapes, pollinators and flowers for cutting. As a parent who uses the garden as a teaching tool for my daughters, these were a lovely (and delicious!) example of working with others and sharing the fruits of our harvest.
The other thing that struck me about this space is the number of plots that are dedicated to growing food for a local non-profit, Face to Face, in Germantown.
I live just a few blocks away, close enough to walk over after dinner in the summer with my kids and water after the sun goes down. It became one of our rituals helping to ground us in our new neighborhood last summer. I hope to have many more seasons of growing food as well as community at this beautiful gem of a garden.
