I have been tending a plot at Werner’s Garden for the past three years. I love being able to grow fresh, organic tomatoes and herbs. In the common spaces of the garden, we grow grapes, blackberries, and raspberries. One of the best things about the garden is having the opportunity to meet other gardeners from the neighborhood and work alongside them. We have regular group workdays where we take care of weeding the pathways, laying down woodchips, and turning the compost.
We are proud to have about 15 plots dedicated to growing vegetables for donation through the PA Horticultural Society’s City Harvest program. Our donated produce goes to Face to Face, a social service organization in Germantown.
Aside from that, the garden preserves precious open space in a neighborhood that is under increasing pressure from development. The wildflowers and other plants that we grow—-all organic–provide food for birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.
This space has been used for gardening for over ten years, and it would be shame to lose it. With all the development going on in Mount Airy, we need to keep every bit of open space that we can!
